Dan Caine - Cascades (Remastered)

Dan Caine is an ambient / post-rock musician born in 1988 in Wirral, England. Dan first picked up the guitar at age 15, inspired by a lot of alternative music, as well as his own father who played the classical guitar. He has had no formal musical training or tutoring, save for being taught a few basic chords from his father. He realised early on that making music was a great way of expressing himself and began recording his experimentations as a hobby. Eventually, in 2013, he published his first album, “Ephemeris”, which was a collection of some of his best ambient pieces that he had made of over the previous years. Since then, his music has evolved and has primarily drawn on influences from ambient, post-rock and new-age music.

For his fifth release on Fluttery Records, Dan Caine comes with a remastered edition of his 2015 album, Cascades. Characterized by long, meditative guitar soundscapes, this is Dan Caine’s defining ambient album. As with all of his works to date, the guitar is the primary tool used to create interweaving, layered melodies and atmospheric soundscapes that are powerful and moving, and full of lucid imagery. It is the perfect example of Dan Caine’s intuitive, sub-conscious style of music making where conscious thought takes the back seat, and emotion and intuition guide the creative process. There is certainly no lack of transcendental moments here, and with every listen, each of the 8 tracks reveal something new, presenting subtle nuances that draw the listener into the music. Although the mood of the album shifts between light and dark, ultimately it will take the listener on a profound journey that, by the end of the record, results in a heightened feeling of peace, tranquility and inspiration.

OP3 - Lumina

OP3 is an ambient and atmospheric music journey, with elements from different genres of music such as modern classical composition, jazz, electro and folk rhythms all coming together to provide the listener with a unique audio experience. When it comes to the live aspect of the project, these elements combined with a strong narrative, poetry and literature are coming to life by a small cast of actors flattered by the outstanding background visuals and artistically placed light show. An OP3 live show is a unique form of art one should experience.

“Lumina” is the third official release of OP3 and as the project leader Dimitris Mitropapas states, “The most expressive and vivid elements of our music so far, in display!”.

The 3-track EP capitalizes the theme of “darkness” and “light” as a metaphor for our lives. Everyone has their moments of light and on the contrary, we all do serve a great time in darkness, especially on those days when nothing seems to get off the ground. The album’s main task is to resonate with the listener in ways that make one feeling grateful to be alive and experience the ups and downs of the human nature. It’s the only way to feel alive after all. Regarding the sound elements of this release, the piano and the string quartet now has a more haunting vibe than ever as well as the electronics are sounding even more alive and being much more original both sonically and progressively.

“Lumina” is being used as a passage to make way for the next full album of OP3, titled “SmyrnAe”. In a way, it prepares the listener for what is to come in the new album since on “Lumina”, OP3 introduces new sounds and instruments resonating more with the folk and jazz elements that the new album will have in abundance.

Three tracks “Out of Darkness”, “Into the Light” and “Lumina” have been chosen to synthesize and exhibit the theme of this constant circle of our lives in an attempt to heal, motivate and breathe life into getting the best out of our human nature.

Sleeping Horses - Water for Air

Hailing from the east coast, Sleeping Horses’ James Randolph Fouty currently records and resides in Portland, Oregon where he records his breathtaking post-rock / ambient tracks. With a past of ambient projects, Sleeping Horses takes a personal approach to the entire process, recording every instrument and even designing all of the artwork.

Sleeping Horses is the newest monicker of ambient wizard James Randolph Fouty (Spirit of Spain,). Having played shows in Iceland and having a number of tracks featured in documentary films and TV Broadcast spots, James was never one to just sit and wait for something to happen. The passion started at a young age with cheap guitars and a 4 track cassette recorder, it even influenced his work life to the extent of taking a job as an evening custodian at the High School he graduated from just to be able to record on the grand piano with his macbook in the late hours, romping through xylophones, chimes, marimbas, and timpani drum lines in an empty high school orchestral room became the groundwork for what would be to come.

They say that the sophomore release can be the hardest, but Sleeping Horses James Fouty makes it seem effortless and delivers the emotion with a passionate drive that expands upon the first album as it picks up almost exactly where the debut left off. Less than a year from the release of his debut, Sleeping Horses has raised the bar with Water for Air.

The Oregon based recording artist took no breaks from songwriting, painstakingly sweating over every tone, arrangement and melody. The passion drips from each measure and overtone as if it were dipped in the deepest and most elaborate feelings possible. Take every sunset you can never forget, every moonlit walk with the heart of a young lover, every time you knew you were in the middle of what would become the most memorable moments of your life, and you might come close to Water for Air. With its lush string arrangements and analogue ambient textures, Water for Air is a collection from a songwriter in his prime, the honesty poured into this LP is evident in every track.

Nadav Cohen – Lacuna

Definition of lacuna: a blank space, a missing part.

Nadav Cohen is an ambient music composer from Melbourne, Australia born in 1999. His music is built on a myriad of emotions and sounds. The music may find itself travelling across the territories of ambient, classical or electronic music.

Lacuna is Cohen’s first release with Fluttery Records and was written, recorded and produced by Nadav Cohen in his home studio during the Melbourne winter of 2017. This album is timeless and genre-less. While it may fall under the ‘ambient’ category, listeners will find themselves labelling this album a dozen of other genres. Cohen describes his desire to write music with one word: Emotion. Lacuna is Nadav Cohen’s attempt to represent emotion in sound form. Despite focusing primarily on melancholy, Cohen uses the track ‘Soft Touch’ to add a shimmer of light in the pool of fervour he has created.

The album begins with a soft orchestral track ‘Welcome Home’ aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgia in the listener with melancholic undertones. This is followed by ‘Ending the Storm’, a track which slowly builds on the layers of ambience and melodies, outlining the complex layers of everyday life.

The second half of the EP begins with a slightly more upbeat track, ‘Soft Touch’. This track is an outlier of the EP, momentarily shifting away from the melancholic overtone and introducing the range of Cohen’s skill. This is followed by ‘Lacuna’, a gentle piano and synth piece which builds to a dramatic climax, bringing back the melancholic tone of the first track.

This year Cohen completed his final year at school. This included facing 8 final exams, 6 of which were mathematics based. The seemingly excessive amounts of maths throughout the year, is represented through Lacuna with his sequential structures and repeating themes. Cohen describes his thought process as ‘logical and sequential’ which can be heard throughout Lacuna as the tracks are layered and built upon.
