Deer Park Ranger

Adaptation

With his third full-length album “Adaptation”, Deer Park Ranger continues to evolve his brand of post-rock and deliver his most mature and sophisticated record to date. This album showcases his cinematic songwriting, in which each song seems to tell a story with the listener clinging to each twist and turn of the plot. Humphrey takes a more patient approach on this release, which gives his songs the space and time to build and cascade into their inevitable chaotic crescendos, and come down to their serene afterglows. Each tense moment seems to have a blissfully calm counterpart giving the listener a gratifying and balanced experience. His use of layers creates dense textures that allow you to uncover more with each listen and will make you want to come back again and again.

“Quick Study” sets the tone of the record and kicks things off on an intense note. Distorted guitars and layered synths swell over a driving drumbeat soaked in reverb. The progression builds to an almost orchestral high before dissolving away.

On “Shapeshifter”, perhaps the most cinematic track of the record, a minimalist lead riff and a tight groove beat are the constant backbone while delayed guitars sweep through ascending scales that gradually build to a glorious crescendo. For the second movement, beautiful arpeggiated piano work is paired with wailing guitars that soar to yet another high note. After nearly 6 minutes of intensity, the listener gets to unwind with an ambient outro that brings everything back to earth.

“Monument” and “Counterpart” both have two movement structures that allow the first half to set up their aggressive finishes. “Silver” uses repetition and menacing bassline to bring the listener into an uneasy place, until beautiful delayed guitars bring a sense of resolve.

Finally, the album closes out with “Home”, a nine-and-a-half minute winding journey that is both touching and powerful, and has a nostalgic and reflective tone. From start to finish, this album takes you on a journey that you won’t forget.

Deer Park Ranger

Wolf

This is a breathtaking post-rock record by Deer Park Ranger, a the solo project of Trevor Humphrey from California.

Deer Park Ranger’s second full length release takes a direct and intense approach to convey its message. Loud, crashing drums, and frantically plucked rhythms lay the foundation for soaring guitar lines and synth leads. Humphrey pairs these heavy verses with swirling, vibrant, and beautiful movements that serve as the necessary context to accentuate their bold counterparts. Soft building patterns quickly turn to distorted waves that wash over the listener. Wolf is an exploration of the darkness within all of us.

This record thrives in dissonant, and tense moments, and strives to find comfort in its own sinister and gritty skin. There is an attitude and intensity that is present throughout the listening experience that encourages the listener to get comfortable with the unknown, and imperfect, and acknowledge their own darkness that may be suppressed. This honest, authentic approach helps us find peace in dark places.

Deer Park Ranger - Bottom of the Ocean

Deer Park Ranger is the solo project of Trevor Humphrey. He formed the project in Oakland, California in mid 2016 and found his sound as he began pairing Rhodes Piano with delayed guitars, and electronics. Inspired by post-rock influences Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai, he layers simple and beautiful melodies that build into powerful crescendos.

While studying music in college, Trevor found his passion for music theory and composition. He formed Deer Park Ranger in mid 2016 after acquiring a Rhodes MK1 electric piano. He has been obsessed with the Rhodes sound for years, and loves its wide tonal range. As he became more intimately familiar with the dynamics of the instrument, he began adding on various effects to get the perfect sound that would pair beautifully with delay guitars and electronics. This new sound excites him and inspires him to build the delicate and powerful pieces of instrumental rock.

Bottom Of The Ocean is the first full length release from Trevor Humphrey’s post-rock/ambient solo project, Deer Park Ranger. After releasing 2 EPs in the last year, Humphrey has followed up with a 10 track LP of compelling and emotional songs. Bottom Of The Ocean is an extremely personal record that touches points of sorrow, pain, and fear while juxtaposing them with moments of hope, and elation. This blend highlights the dichotomy of emotions that are present during a major life change. The painful end of things you used to love, and the overwhelming excitement of your next chapter. This emotional tug and pull is present throughout the listening experience. Progressive movements are intertwined with soft piano melodies, and blended with synths and arpeggiators to create swelling soundscapes. Heavy, aggressive guitars tear through tracks like Gallows, while Part Of The Story and The Days You Used To Love are reflective and evoke feelings of nostalgia, and the title track cascades to a crescendo of hope and triumph.

Deer Park Ranger - Moderation

Deer Park Ranger is a post-rock & ambient solo project of Trevor Humphrey from Oakland, California. After introducing his brand of post-rock with his debut EP, Trevor Humphrey has followed up with a dynamic and powerful collection of post-rock songs for his second Deer Park Ranger release. From the opening discord of “Shipwreck” to the finality of French horns fading out on “Selling All the Shelves”, Moderation is profoundly emotional and deeply affecting.

While the core elements of the Deer Park Ranger sound remain intact, Moderation showcases a greater sonic range and explores new sounds. The Rhodes piano is featured prominently, but often through heavy distortion, delay, or modulation. Humphrey continues to approach song writing and composition by layering sounds and building dense soundscapes full of rich textures. Melodies interact across layers of guitar and piano that create movement and evoke emotions ranging from melancholy to triumph.
