Monochromie’s breathtaking Beyond Frontiers

“It is always a treat to hear new music from Wilson Trouvé aka Monochromie. His music is simply magical. I say “simply” from the point of view of someone utterly bedazzled by his approach to composition & “magical” from a place of awe as I try to comprehend the expression he weaves with strings & […]

We Deserve This - Tearing

We Deserve This is a one man project formed in the year 2010 by a German composer Jan-Dirk Platek.

This is his fifth release on Fluttery Records and it’s kind of strange how his sounds expand from one release to another. The EP contains 4 new songs which are played, recorded, mixed and mastered by Jan-Dirk Platek in his hometown Velbert in Germany. We Deserve This is known for a prolific release schedule and it’s safe to say that “Tearing“ is Jan-Dirk Platek’s most ambitious work. Beautiful piano textures under layers of ambient soundscapes. He produced an outstanding mixture of ambient, modern classical, electronic music / downtempo and post-rock. The melancholic feeling is still here but this time, We Deserve This is going a step further in the experimental electronic scene in the like of Kiasmos, Grandbrothers or Hybrid.

The four songs are all composed on a piano which you can hear deep in the sound of every song. These songs are like a lonely walk in the mountains, always fresh and overwhelming. Jan-Dirk Platek shows us once more that he can create films and visuals in our heads only with his film score type of music. Now, get lost in the beautiful sounds of “Tearing“. If you’re into modern classical or ambient / electronic music, you should give this EP a try. Melancholic but not depressive, dark shadows under bright lights - a musical journey, enjoy!

Okada - Division Of Self

“Division of Self" has a cinematic quality, the silver screen brought to life through music. You can barely make out a child’s whisper, a placid, slightly melancholic piano and a female vocal that repeatedly cries out: ‘Tell me that it’s over‘. The dark ambient music facade fades, and the listener approaches a lovely, inviting ambient interior, with rose-colored paint and dusty, forgotten statues, decaying together like former lovers tangled up in the dirty sheets of a dead romance.

The sedate strolling pace is just what’s needed. Okada creates a dreamy vibe that is intensely warm and understanding, full of theatrical flourishes and quieter moments for reflection and stillness. Ethereal in sound, and yet flirting with clipped n’ clunky beats, Division of Self has an ambient heart that treads over a weary soul. The music has recovered from its troubled opening. It’s almost as if it were saying “don’t give up just yet”.

We Deserve This - Floating Colors

"Floating Colors" is the third album from Germany`s We Deserve This for Fluttery Records. Jan-Dirk Platek`s output is overwhelming and there`s no way to stop him. He once said: "I`m addicted to music and the creative process in writing and recording new music. I just can`t stop because my mind is full of new ideas." His new album "Floating Colors“ is about Synesthesia.

Synesthesia is a perceptual condition of mixed sensations: a stimulus in one sensory modality (e.g., hearing) involuntarily elicits a sensation/experience in another modality (e.g. vision). Likewise, perception of a form (e.g., a letter) may induce an unusual perception in the same modality (e.g. a color).

Can you imagine seeing colors when hearing music? Do you ever wanted to know what color your favorite song is? "Floating Colors" has 6 songs, all named after a certain color. Jan described his new album as an experience in both songwriting and recording process. It`s like the missing link between "Pacific" and "Fusion", ambient music dominated heavier sounds.

Before the recording Jan bought an analog Novation Bass Station 2 and you can hear this synth in every song. "I wanted to explore new ways to expand the sound of We Deserve This and the mission is accomplished." says Jan. The record sounds like an innovative instrumental record from the future with wonderful piano lines, heavy guitars and some kind of strange sounds.

"I need to go forward and everyone`s lifetime is limited, I don`t want to stuck in the past - the future is wide open" Jan says regarding Floating Colors. This album is something special with all these melancholy that comes out of these songs. If you`re able to expand your horizon then you really have to check this out. It´s like the beauty in colors/sound. To dig all the little details in the sound headphones are highly recommended.

Monochromie - Behind Black Clouds

Monochromie is a musical project of Wilson Trouvé. His music is emerging from many melting spots on borders of ambient, noise and post-rock; thus every song created is a pure original with the resonance of a particular atmosphere. Dark or luminous, hot or cold, wind or earth - attentive ear will detect them all. Sigur Ros, Pan American, Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt Zion, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto & Alva Noto or Frederic Chopin, Erik Satie and the sonatas or impromptus of Franz Schubert are among the many influences of the artist.

In 2012, he released his debut "Angels And Demons" on Fluttery Records and received the most flattering reviews. A year later, his second release "Enlighten Yourself While You Sleep" clearly contrasted with his previous piece, what only proved artists skilfulness and versatility. Between the first album releases and his latest piece, which we are going to present to you shortly, Wilson was not neglecting his career and self-released two EP, "Winter" in 2014 and "Brussel-Zuid" in 2015.

Today, he is coming with his brand new album "Behind Black Clouds". Who could introduce his art better than the composer himself?

"After a full year of composition, I am excited to finally present my fourth album: Behind Black Clouds. Like in the past, the process was erratic. Some tracks I could start and complete within a single day. Other took me weeks, even months, to come maturity. I try to keep the ear on the ground of my emotions, my mood and feelings. The time has to be right." says Wilson.

Album's core instrument is a piano. Even though most of his album was composed in his studio in Marseille, the piano types varies according to a place Wilson was in. Piano recordings together with samples taken from the street and with melodies, basic music editing effects and other instruments like metallophone or melodica created wonderful music carrying the right expression achieved through balance in artist's creative process.

Wilson further says: "Of course, the visual artist that I am influences the way I perceive and use sound. I literally view it as a palpable texture, one that can be sculpted, modeled, blended and bended in various forms. This also reflects on the way my music tells specific stories. It is no different than clay, dust, paper, colors, paint or inks. Eventually, I want the music that I create to become a collection of paintings, series of shots and screens made of all the many layers that I patiently add along months of creation. Until the balance becomes right. I feel they become landscapes, clouds, shades and lights."

Monochromie invites atmospheric electronic music fans to blissful listening session one more time.

Max Lilja - Morphosis

Lilja, known as one of the most versatile and adventurous cellist of all times, is a Finnish cellistand composer. Max Lilja is also cofounder of legendary Apocalyptica and touring member of Tarja Turunen (former Nightwish).

In Max Lilja’s Morphosis, the master of the electric cello utilizes a wide spectrum of analog and digital effects to build strong identities for the sounds originating from the cello. In the nine instrumental songs you can hear influences from trip hop to electronica, from rock to classical, all morphed to the amazing cinematic images through Lilja’s cello.

Morphosis is an album where all the music is written on the cello. Max found inspirations in the melodies which wrote themselves on jamming sessions. Also, he used different approaches to the instrument by using different tunings, "A possibility that is sadly and very commonly ignored" says Max.

"When I record I’m balancing in between the possibilities of the instrument added with the electronics and the challenges of doing it all on cello." says Lilja "Some of the lines require a very classical approach and in others I need to completely reform the original cello sound. I really enjoy going deep into the sonic possibilities, tweeking the knobs of analog effect devices and finding the perfect sounds for all the parts of the arrangement.

Lilja was touring while at the same time recording and mixing the album. Lilja thinks it made the process more intense. "Making a music album is an intense but rewarding process and especially when you do almost all yourself. Working on the vision, writing, producing, performing, recording, mixing and being involved in the mastering. In all the steps I’m working with material that is born deep inside me and is highly emotional to me. It’s very challenging to find inside me all the different roles needed in the process and respect when the producer tells me that the arrangement sucks... so many decisions to be made and all have an influence on what the listener will hear and feel."

Morphosis is probably not the easiest music album in the world but the artist thinks that he has achieved something truly unique that the world has never heard before. In the album, the master of the electric cello utilizes a wide spectrum of analog and digital effects to build strong identities for the sounds originating from the cello. In the nine instrumental songs you can hear influences from trip hop to electronica, from rock to classical, all morphed to the amazing cinematic images through Lilja’s cello.

Okada - Okada

Okada is darkly cinematic, but it’s never bleak or depressing. In fact, the bubbly female vocals haunt the music, lifting it up with caring hands out of the dark mire and into a subdued electronic coloring that sits easily with the listener.

Okada is a project by Greg Pappas from Alabama, US. Initially known to the music world as ZXYZXY, Greg used it as a vehicle for experimentation and refinement of his writing technique while dabbling in electro-acoustic, ambient, post-rock and even wonky genres.

It’s a bruise that discolors the music’s original pale skin, her original pale genre, and the vanilla blooms into a new, shady gem right in front of our eyes. The low, dull sound of classical instrumentation has been brushed aside like a September cobweb, cleaned of its original timbre. An ambient layer peels itself away, and later a hushed electronic beat shuffles itself and the music forward, proving that electronic rhythms can indeed be subtle, caring and sophisticated.

Conflicting emotions cycle through the music. It can lead to serenity but it can also bring a flood of intense love. It’s gentle, fragile, the cycling beat and the melancholic black and white notes flowing naturally, freely. It’s graceful music that lives and breathes a seemingly simple life in the face of musical complexity. There are a lot of layers underneath its surface; a slowly shifting labyrinth of sound that continually takes you by surprise.
