Sky Flying By – (Re) Routed

Sky Flying Bird is a post-rock project by David Palmer, who is based in Boston, US. He, as Sky Flying By, builds worlds out of music.

His music career began with a cardboard box drum set, and he hasn’t lost any of the creativity or imagination along the way. His musical worlds are deep and rich, full of graceful melody and arcs of delicate strings, where the notes fly and dip and soar and the drums build bridges that carry you safely across. Not just ordinary drums; he pulls in African, Asian, and Latin elements in addition to standard drum kits to give a variety of audio textures. He experiments until the alchemy is perfect, exploring different ways to use analog instrumentation in conjunction with synths, mixing live string sounds with digital to create new tones, or stretching a sound out digitally to give a familiar instrument an entirely new voice. He’ll use anything that works, from a bow on a guitar to yes, even a cardboard box.

Making music is about making something new, about going on a journey. Sometimes, though,it isn’t about where you’re going, but who you are, and who you become, along the way. And after you’ve grown and changed, you revisit the places where you’ve been, seeing them with new eyes. Sky Flying By is revisiting the places where it all started in the new album (Re) Routed.

New listeners will be charmed by the depth of sound and the combination of simple melodies with complicated undercurrents that Sky Flying By is known for. Long-time fans will be thrilled to hear this album, too- it represents a new zenith of skill from an already talented musician. Working with some equally skilled backup, Sky Flying By has created an album that leaps out of its post-rock niche and will be loved by anyone who really appreciates beauty in music.

Khara - Heaven Can Wait

Khara are a post-rock / instrumental quartet hailing from Kumanovo, Macedonia featuring the likes of Emil Pachkovski, Milan Trajkovikj, Filip Stojkovski and Filip Mihajlovski. They started playing together in October 2014. The name of the band comes from Mongolian mythology. It tells the tale of the first shaman who could bring the dead back to life, his name was Kara. They have been inspired by the myths of Kara, as well as his life with all of its elements.

From the characteristic heavy-riff guitars, through the high pitched shredding melodies accompanied by a heart-pounding bass guitar and drums, the soft and quiet instrumentals building into a climax and the ethereal live performances, they try to evoke feelings and leave their listeners to create their own stories. Love, war, hope – that’s what affects these four young men to wander through the world with one goal, creating music for people to relate to. To have something to look forward in times of joy, and have something to lean on in times of sadness. Khara pour all of their emotions into what they do, trying to show life as it is, a cycle winding between sorrow and joy. They hope that every listener perceives their music differently because what someone feels as grief, another one feels as happiness.

‘’Heaven Can Wait’’ is the their second album. It is their most intimate work up to date, with every song representing a intricate part of their lives. The album honors the struggle, the pain, the kindness, the happiness. It is meant to show the different sides of life and how every single person is meaningful to this world in different ways. How every single one of us is a light that shines in many ways. They want you to know that you are all important and you have a place in this world, and that’s why, together we can say – Heaven Can Wait. Band members say: ‘’Become you. Feel with your own heart. Think with your own mind. Pain is a part of your life. Embrace it. Trust in your emotions. Become free.’’

42DE – Fall Of The Moon

After four long years spent composing, contemplating, reviewing and improving their work, Italy’s post-rock band, 42DE are coming out with their first full-length work: “Fall of the Moon”. The album represents a summary of all the experiences that have reunited them under the wings of music, friendship and emotions.

42DE began playing together in Palermo, Italy, in 2014, starting from a mutual idea developed by the founders: Manfredi Anzalone, Sandro Giambruno, Nicolò Borrometi, and Valerio Ballarò. The band immediately set out on their journey concentrating on creating their own original tracks, distancing altogether from each members’ past experiences, with the ultimate goal of merging their inclination for punk and hardcore with a post-rock sound and other instrumental genres. After one whole year spent composing, the band releases their first self-produced EP in August 2015. However, a few years after the release, the band formation underwent an unexpected change: Valerio leaves the band to be replaced by Massimiliano Bellavia. Their debut EP was re-issued by Fluttery Records. Now, they have their first full-length album.

What makes this post-rock record so unique is the fact that it was always meant to become a speechless concept-album, telling a story without the use of lyrics: listeners are driven by music to elaborate their personal defined storyline, helped with some hints left by the band itself (song titles, drawings etc.).

“Fall of the Moon” recounts a dreamlike scenario where earth defends itself from humanity’s occupation by calling the moon to descend to its surface and delete every sign of civilization by falling. The moon – according to 42DE’s imaginary – could be considered as the seed of a new life, the place where the clouds of a new Great Flood are waiting to be spread to wash everything away to start again with a new improved concept of existence itself. This album couldn’t be a reality without the intervention of more than 80 faithful fans that have participated to 42DE’s Musicraiser [Crowdfunding] campaign: it is going to represent a great new start for this Mediterranean post-rock band’s musical journey.

Gargle - Wading in Shallow Waters

Gargle’s sound exceeds common genre classifications such as post-rock and modern classical music. Layering the light and dark sounds of instruments such as the guitar, accordion, and piano, their compositions transmit a vivid story with a touch of melancholy.

The album is a collection of meticulously crafted soundscapes composed with their signature accordion and guitar sound while applying additional components with other items including piano and electronics. Their compositions are inspired by modern classical music as can be heard in their previous collaborative release “Absence” with Bosque de mi Mente.

Performing regularly in the Tokyo area, the duo also toured France and Spain in 2011. In 2012, the album "Glow in the Gloom" was released on Fluttery Records. A collaboration album with Bosques de mi Mente (Spain) "Absence" was also released on Fluttery Records in the fall of 2013 and its Japanese edition CD was released through Dewfall Records in 2014.

As with their past releases, the album features collaborations. Other than the aforementioned track “Morphine”, the disk includes 4 tracks featuring Eva Tribolles of the French electro-punk collective MYCIAA on contrabass. Mixing and mastering duties were performed by Haruhisa Tanaka (PURRE-GOOHN) who had mastered the band’s previous album “Absence”.

The album illustrates meandering passages through various scenes and emotions. The opening track Morphine, inspired by Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novel “Notes From Underground”, marks the band’s first use of text for their music. The poem was penned by fellow musician Sean Fujimoto (LVV, DrunkenForest, etc.). Furthermore, including the second and third tracks “Hibernation” and “Ephemeral Light”, which are now regularly performed at their live performances, the 9-track album can be considered the culmination of Gargle’s career.

Summer Effect - Reverie

Summer Effect is a post-rock band from Indonesia which was formed in early 2012. Ibo (drums, keys) is the founder. At the end of 2011, he met Aroel (guitar, keys), and since then they have been playing as an instrumental band which blends shoegaze, ambient and post-rock.

Reverie is their fourth album. In this album, they produced an extraordinary mixture of cinematic music, post-rock and ambient, resulting in a very rich work. Summer Effect created a beautiful chaotic album with heavy guitar sounds, soft and delicate piano, pads and plentiful strings sections. They hope it is going to give a positive message to the listeners. All the positive words come from the instrumental music, they say. ”Listen carefully to hear these words. They are not there. There are no actual words. But feel the music and you will hear them”.

Nearly all the songs were composed on a piano and by using pad sounds. Then the musicians added beat drums, bass, and guitar as well as a few sound effects to enhance nuances on each track based on their titles. Summer Effect are inviting people who like shoegaze, ambient and post-rock - which produce certain vibrations of atmosphere - to listen Reverie. This is a cinematic guitar album with piano, strings and drums.
