42DE - EP

42DE began playing together in Palermo, Italy, in 2014, starting from a mutual idea developed by the founders: Manfredi Anzalone, Sandro Giambruno, Nicolò Borrometi, and Valerio Ballarò. The band immediately set out on their journey concentrating on creating their own original tracks, distancing altogether from each members’ past experiences, with the ultimate goal of merging their inclination for punk and hardcore with a post-rock sound and other instrumental genres. After one whole year spent composing, the band releases their first self-produced EP in August 2015. However, a few years after the release, the band formation underwent an unexpected change: Valerio leaves the band to be replaced by Massimiliano Bellavia.

With Massimiliano, the thought of producing the first album finally reaches a more concrete profile and the band signs for the first album with Fluttery Records. The thriving creative moment continues, and each track seems to be reaching out for new life: guitars played with wider reverbs, melancholic arpeggios, sharp and chaotic distortions interspersed with pensive and relaxing moments, each device posing an emphasis on every emotion evoked throughout the album.

42DE’s first EP tries to evoke a series of well-defined images and pass onto the audience as they listen. The title of each track provides all the necessary information in order to allow the mind to wander within the five different depicted scenarios. Although it could be defined as a prototype version of the upcoming album – which is going to display a better-defined version of the same story – the EP represents the first proper glance on what 42DE stands for. Energy, anger, melancholy, hope, desolation: they are all feelings being featured and juxtaposed during the course of the EP, in such a way to create a thought-out emotional journey.

Cold, Cold Heart - Arch

For the past two years Cold, Cold Heart have been working (slowly) on the follow up to their BBC 6 music celebrated debut album and return with an EP entitled ‘Arch’.

Cold, Cold Heart is a post-rock / ambient band from London, UK. Robert, Chris and Gareth assembled in early 2014 out of friendship and a shared admiration for bands such as Stars of the Lid, Low and Sparklehorse. It is this character that informed the band’s 2015 debut, “How The Other Half Live And Die”, an album so tuned into heartbreak and loss and then mourned and celebrated in a collection of ruptured, elegiac and sky-bound instrumentals. “How The Other Half Live And Die” stands as a shared soundtrack to life. “Anxiety, illness, depression, hope and repair are all things that can be felt by anyone, at any point. We have all had our fair share”, explains Robert. To the fear and beauty in death.

With time and focus spent on the development of their sound, the result transports the listener through life itself, representing the roaming adventure towards happiness and contentment. Entwined with the narrative, the integration of a string quartet and modular synthesizers have bolstered the grandeur, leaving the listener captivated by their sonic exposition.

Recorded in Surbiton and West Sussex throughout 2016 and 2017 ‘Arch’ comes from a simplistic, pure place; displaying an incredible and developed sense of control and restraint in their work, while still resonating between order and chaos, glitter and dirt, beauty and destruction. Nothing is planned or predetermined with Cold, Cold Heart’s output, only that it’s a journey worth taking.

Ghost Island - Assimilation

Post-rock band from Phoenix, Arizona, Ghost Island seeks to relive your most ecstatic bliss just before confronting your most impenetrable fears. The band’s music makes you feel far from home while offering a comforting solace that comes from within.

John conceived the concept of Assimilation after a failed suicide attempt following the end of a nearly four-year relationship. With the help of Roddy and Michael, the songs became expressive tales taking the listener through the range of emotions that comes with entering and exiting a relationship for a person with clinical depression. Rather than any spoken word, the song titles themselves offer a glimpse into the mindset of the performers, allowing listeners to interpret the music however they see fit. Ultimately, the album concludes on a positive note, asserting that it is okay to be different and okay to assimilate into your environment in order to get the human interaction we all need in order to function. Like the previous release, Destroyer, Assimilation was recorded entirely in house by John, who also handled mixing duties as well as art direction.

“Like it was stated, the entire album was conceptualized after some massive heartbreak on my end, and I wanted to push out those emotions I felt, when I looked back on my long relationship, as a form of closure. I wanted to put that chapter behind me, and felt that I did an excellent job doing it. With the help of both Roddy and Michael I was able to achieve something I firmly believe will be a point of pride not only of my own opinion, but that of all the band members.”

Merchants of Air, Review:

“A calm, lucid, quiet and very modest post-rock album, Assimilation can be considered a minor masterpiece, specially taking into consideration its precise and detailed technicality. Although excessively calm throughout its whole ordeal, there’s a singular vitality within the music, and it’s impossible to be indifferent to it. With complex arrangements and conscious, abundant and methodic melodies, Assimilation is an interesting album, that really evaluates and inserts into a more embracing panorama the sonorous devices of the genre, over a mixture of traditional devotion and modest originality.

CannedSound, Review:

“The title track breathes like a cool winter breeze. Don’t be mistaken, the song still has its punishing moments, but there’s a hopefulness that didn’t exist before; a hopefulness that was hard-won."

Sairen - Neige Nuit

Hailing from France, Sairen is a music composer accustomed to great alternative instrumental pieces. Introduced to musical listening and instrumental practice since childhood, he discovered computer music which allowed him to take his first steps towards music creation. Since then, he has become very sensitive to baroque and romantic music as well as dark metal or post-rock, and he sometimes defines his music as a link between these seemingly opposite worlds.

Through a rich and harmonious sound language, Sairen delivers a powerful contemplative music that evolves between post-rock, orchestral and electronic music. With a style of writing sometimes borrowed from classical music and the use of amplified and electro instruments, Sairen offers a burning emotional sound universe, where each piece is an invitation to an uncertain and tumultuous journey.

“Neige Nuit” is the new release of Sairen. This intense album in nuances does not need much time for its elaboration: it shows a raw, homogeneous and spontaneous piece which through a rough winter journey evokes the subversive radicality of Being. The pieces are few, but their evolution is ample and generous, like “Vortex Lyre” which starts in a calm and serene way, ending in a smashing downpour of instrumental rising. Sometimes peaceful (Nordvarme, Shield of Light), epic (Fall of the Colossus) or dreamy (Tsuki no Namida), tracks follow and answer each other, until the relentless Neolithic which accomplishes the album in a massive flood of decibels.

It defines the Artificial Waves sound that includes traditional post-rock instruments: guitar, bass, drums, but also electronics, piano and strings parts adding details to overall mix every time you listen to it. “Initial Link” consists of six dynamic and melodic tracks, for example the third track called “Transient” tells a long story through its complicated composition structure from loud intro to quiet main theme presented on electric piano and guitars and exciting solo part. This release is the 2018 remixed version of “Initial Link” that gives you the opportunity to enjoy Artificial Waves’ music in better mix and quality.
