Sons is the farewell record from Arms of Tripoli, a poignant and powerful final chapter in the band’s decade-long journey through the outer edges of instrumental rock. Formed in 2011, the Los Angeles-based group emerged from the underground as bold architects of a genre-defying sound—cerebral yet cinematic, intricate yet emotionally resonant. Over the years, they carved out a distinctive space in the post-rock world, known for their layered compositions, progressive structures, and experimental textures. Sons stands as the culmination of that creative evolution—a record that captures the band at their most focused, melodic, and dynamically adventurous.

Though the record is a celebration of their sonic identity, it is also marked by a bittersweet turn. Shortly after completing the record, drummer and founding member George Tseng was forced to step away from music due to a debilitating injury. Rather than continue without him, the remaining members Michael Bouvet, Allen Porter, and Gabriel Lewismade the difficult decision to bring the band to a close. The result is not a mournful goodbye, but rather a vibrant, energized farewell, filled with the same curiosity and craft that defined Arms of Tripoli’s entire output.

From the outset, Sons signals a sharpening of intent. While rooted in the expansive tendencies of post-rock, these songs lean into more concise, dynamic structures and a clear affection for melodic guitar interplay. The record opens with “Velveeta Skies,” a multi-movement piece that shifts seamlessly from riff-heavy rock to proggy interludes, doom-like atmosphere, and minimalist outro—an ideal overture for what follows. “Universe 25” channels angular ‘90s indie rock influences through the band’s signature lens, landing on a massive, reverb-laden chorus before spiraling back into tightly wound guitar lines. “Utopia” unfolds like a three-act play, blending slinky grooves with twin-guitar harmonies that evoke both Chicago post-rock and classic metal, guiding the listener through a subtle emotional arc.

Elsewhere, “The Beautiful Ones” leans into math-rock territory with sharp, stop-start rhythms and intricate chord progressions, interrupted only by the album’s sole vocal sample, a cryptic spoken word moment that adds a haunting layer of urgency. “Taking Daddy to the Airport” offers a more direct link to Arms of Tripoli’s earlier sound, starting with anthemic propulsion before giving way to a slow-burning build rich in atmosphere and emotional release. The closing track, “Casual Conversations,” is perhaps the band’s most complete statement—combining complexity and restraint, melody and noise, tension and release in a way that feels both final and open-ended.

Sons is a testament to Arms of Tripoli’s commitment to crafting instrumental music that challenges expectations while remaining deeply expressive. It’s an album born from joy, collaboration, and the shared understanding that this would be their last. The band extends heartfelt thanks to Fluttery Records, their families, friends, and the many artists and fans who’ve supported them along the way. With Sons, Arms of Tripoli doesn’t just end a chapter—they close the book with clarity, grace, and a record that will resonate far beyond their final note.
